B. arborea x B. sanguinea 'Signal'
These have come out rather anaemic, but they are beautifully scented, heat-tolerant and virus tolerant (though maybe I need to wait a bit longer to see how they progress). They flowered all through the heat of summer.
Half came out pale yellow and half this apricot colour (which must be arrived at as a mix of pale yellow and pale red, I think). I have crossed each colour with a sibling of the same colour. Still waiting for the seeds to germinate......

Both are beautiful. :D Congratulations!
That they have tolerated your hot summer is a big step forward in the successful cultivation of this group. Has the second seedling shown color, after it had cooled off?

No they are still quite pale....
I hope the yellow and the red pigments will be inherited separately in some of the next generation (sibling x sibling), and also that some will have two red genes and some two yellow genes - to arrive at some bright yellow, some red, some pink, some pale yellow, some bright red and yellow etc etc, and or course some white. Plus a variety of shapes and some with stronger scent!! I do not ask for much!
I have decided not to cross them with sanguinea again. I think that would be a mistake which would a) lose scent and b) lose virus- and heat-tolerance.
Do you agree?

Mobisu is out of a backcross of sanguinea to rubella. Besides the good traits, she has kept the wonderful fragrance. I would try this cross.
I might have Wildfire - Pollen available in May.

Alistair I have been in touch with a bgi member over here in the uk Alan Ashworth he has been appointed european director for bgi, he is doing some interesting crosses at the moment and we exchanged some seeds recently, one of the seed crosses he gave me was Lila Rosa x Sanguinea I have 3 growing well at the moment it will be interesting to see how they turn out,I will of course post pictures when they do.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep. RF
